“The Shoal”
The lagoon of Venice, with its actual 55,000 hectares
of surface, it is considered the most extended Italian
humid zone and, together with other deltaic complexes,
it is one of the most important of the Mediterranean basin.
This itinerary does not want to discover the classic lagoon
of Venice but a still little known part.
In south of Venice we find a particular lagoon called
Shoal. The shoal is a typical emerged formation, rich
of vegetation, that delimits water mirrors calls “Valli
da pesca”, very important for the economic and landscaped
point of view. This group of shoals and valli da pesca,
together with the four every day tides that completely
change the quality of the water, make this territory a
natural park. Isolated regarding Porto Marghera, the lagoon
is characterized from a general tranquillity. That invites
much species of birds to make it a
stage for their migrations. The visit of the lagoon is
hindered by the various tides and by not deep channels.
The boatmen are forced to use small motor boats with flat
bottom that can transport three or four visitors.

In the afternoon continuation of the excursion in the
nature reserve of the State in order to admire on foot
the fauna and the flora of the place. The reserve is situated
in the inferior medium part of the lagoon of Venice and
it extends for 500 hectares. The area represents an important
example of “embanked valley” among the better
ones conserved of the
lagoon estuary. It is a typical fishing valley of the
Venetian lagoon. It extends along troughs of the bottom,
encircled from alluvial soils of limo and clay which emerge
during the periods of low water. In the valley are also
presented wide mirrors of sweet and brackish water, canes
field, uncultivated meadow, channels and hedges. The absolute
protagonists of
the oasis are birds, which presence catch up the 10000
exemplary. There are also mammalian as the rate, the beech-marten,
the skunk, rarer the fox. Of extreme interest is the presence
of the buffalo, that today lives
in the wild state. |
